Role of the sister (meimei) in Chinese culture is somewhat similar to the role defined by the culture as far as women is concerned.

The culture in general has changed over the years but certain fundamentals about the culture as far as women are concerned have largely remained unchanged. Women are expected to play certain roles as far as society and family are concerned and these roles are roles they still play today.

Traditionally the Chinese family system is one which is based on a patriarchal system.

It is centred around the oldest male in the family. In past cases this would be the grandfather but in more recent times with the traditional Chinese family has evolved from one which is an extended family down to a nuclear.

Unmarried daughters and sisters to the other play their role in helping their mothers take care of their siblings and the rest of the home. In the absence of the mother, the sister is expected to play all the roles previously held or maintained by the mother previously.

Sisters are viewed as rather temporary in the home in their older years.

While the sons share the existing wealth of the family among themselves on the death of their parents, their sisters were only entitled to a dowry which they received when married as their inheritance.

A sister and a woman rarely tied to the home she was born in when they were married. Sisters were never permitted to marry anyone else that had the same surname as they did as such as person was seen as a relative and the union therefore incestuous.

However, marriage to relatives from the mothers side was seen as quite usual and so therefore, rather frequent.
